Unit 3: American Imperialism:

  • What is the role of the United States in the world today?------> The U.S. gets involved in a lot of countries affairs;military; involved in 2 wars; Americans are consumers and American companies operates and sells things all over the world in many foreign countries(ex. cocoa cola, nike, google- all have offices/stores/products all around the world ; America is a major world player political, economic, and military; American colleges/universities are seen as top in the world and many international students come to America for college

  • What do you think its role should be?------> I think America should be the leader out of the world, but when it comes to a conflict that has nothing to do with America, then they should handle out their own difference without America. But if they want to help they can like for example the earthquake in Haiti, they helped. And i think that some of the issues that America may have, they should fix their own problems then help out another.

  • Where does the United States have troops in the world today? How many countries? What does this tell us about the role of America in the world?------> The U.S. has troops in about 70% of the worlds countries. 135 countries. I think other countries really depend on America because of their lack of econimic

  • How many countries have at least one McDonald's? What does this tell us about America's role in the world?

  • What other information can help us understand America's role in the world? Remember_the_Maine_pin.jpg

Analysis: (part 1)

  • I think a major war was going on and something occured that it had to be remembered and acknowledged

  • Maybe This was a bout that they used to trade goods with and maybe a lot of important people died in the ship going to Maine

Part 2:

  • What is "Remember the Maine" actually all about?--------> It was about a battleship that sunk which started the Spain and American war; War between the U.S and Spain; the ship- The USS Maine was one of the first U.S. battleships to be constructed

  • When did the U.S. go to war with Spain?---------> 1898

  • Why would John Hay call it a "splendid little war"?---------> It was brief and very short battle that lasted about 4 months

AMERICAN IMPERILISM

  • What does imperialism mean?

    • ---->Extending a state's rule over other territories; Extending a nation's power, authority, or influence over other places-building an empire, expanding your power
  • What are the main reasons that countries engage in imperialism?

    • ---->natural resources- sugar, lumber, silk, rice, rum
    • ---->expanded trade opportunities- new customers
    • ---->competition with other countries- global power
    • ---->military needs- new bases and places for supplies/refueling
    • ---->Social Darwinism-the belief that one group of people is better than another

  • Where has America practiced imperialism? Make a list of places.

    • Chile
    • Cuba--> a lot of U.S. influence until the Communists(led by Fidel Castro) took over
    • Santo Domingo
    • Puerto Rico--> continues to be a U.S. territory- might become the 51st state someday?
    • Venezuela
    • Guatemala
    • Honduras
    • Nicaragua
    • Panama-THE PANAMA CANAL--> greatly shortened the distance from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean
    • Philippine Islands--> Became a U.S. territory for about 50 years after the S-A War
    • Hawaiian Islands--> became the 50th U.S. state
    • Midway island-not under U.S. control--> mostly a wilfire refuge today
    • wake Island-not under U.S. control--> mostly a wildfire refuge today
    • Johnston Island--> uninhabited and out of use
    • Guam- still under U.S. control--> important Navy & Air Force base
    • American Somoa--> still under U.S. control, but self-governed
    • Alaska
  • Most of America's imperialist activity took place in the Pacific islands and Central America/ the caribbean

  • Do you agree with the practice of imperialism?

    • In some ways i think if one place or country does not agree or just not doing so well, another could step in and control but only if that place accepts. i really don't think that a country should have power or a lot of power in another country because everyone should all work together and compromise. For example when other countries import and export goods and such, without a good relationship with them you probably will not get what you want because everyone needs to put negative things behind and get along.

Analysis: This Picture about imperialism represents how America Held the war with Spain an dhow they Won.

Spanish- American war video:

  • people in cuba were not happy because they were in the rule of the spanish and they wanted to rule themselves
  • cuban wanted independence
  • the philipines did not want spain ruling them
  • the philipines stood alongside the U.S. to fight against spain
  • 5,400 deaths from diseases and unsanitary conditions 379 from fighting
  • lasted about 4 months long, the U.S. dominated quickly and spain sort of gave up
  • Mckinley was the president during the S-A War,

By the end of Unit III, I will be able to...
  1. Define imperialism and identify and describe the key motivations for its practice. ----> Imperialism- extending a nations power or influence over other places
  2. Explain the causes, course, and consequences of Spanish-American War ----> the U.S. Gained a lot from this quick war and they still don't know what happened that caused the blow up.
  3. Analyze the effects of "yellow journalism" on the events surrounding the S-A War.----> What is Yellow journalism?, Why is it important?
  4. Discuss the reasons for and against the US acquisition of new lands.
  5. Complete thorough and thoughtful 2-column notes.
  6. Create a Google Map.
  7. Create a Google Presentation (powerpoint).

Define Yellow Journalism and explain its role in the S-A War.
Yellow Journalism----> Journalism that exaggerates(sensationalize) the news to attract peoples/readers attention; that led Americans to war fever; excited about going to war with spain

Role in the S-A War----> In order for the people to really know what was going on, journalists created these newspapersand posters and showed the aspects of the different sides going to war. It also was a major reason for the war to go on, they instigated what was going on to make it more interesting.

The Fruit of Imperialism:

Imperialism.PNG
Imperialism.PNG

  • What do you see?
    • I see a man(Uncle Sam) picking apples on a tree.
    • the apples have names of countries on them
    • he is wearing the U.S. flag colors on- he represents America
    • He is looking specifically at the Cuba apple
    • the wall separating the man and the tree
    • he is wearing a sombrero
  • What do these different depictions mean?
    • The apple that says Cuba and the flag outfit represents how the U.S. wanted to take control of Cuba because of their sugar
    • also he had other apples in his basket with various names on them, of which may be the countries he already took over and/or parts of U.S
    • the wall that the tree is behind represnts how they were not together
    • the very large Basket- America is growing and wants more, it might be too big (they are starting tolook greedy
    • the words on the apples---> Cuba, Russia, Philippines(in tree-other countries)-Alaska, California, LA, Texas(in basket-part of U.S.)
    • the wall represents the border of the U.S.
    • the tree on the side represents outside the U.S.
    • the sombrero represents Mexico, Central America, and South America-(Latin America)
  • What is the cartoonist's POV?

    • The Cartoonist is saying that America is happy, but imperialism is not that great because America is getting too greedy.
